Indianapolis Opera's Elixir of Love
Indianapolis Opera opens its 45th season with the ever-amusing Elixir of Love. Set in Lucca Italy just prior to WWI, Donizetti's Elixir of Love finds penniless and lovelorn Nemorino as a busboy in the bustling piazza café owned by the independent and beautiful Adina. She mocks even the idea of love, and as a joke, pretends to swoon for the virile Sergeant Belcore, agreeing to marry him that very night. Enter the traveling salesman and racecar driver "Doctor" Dulcamara with his assistant Mario, selling his miracle elixir (really just cheap Bordeaux) which promises to heal all ills and make the hardest of hearts melt in a single day, and Nemorino thinks he’s got just the ticket to win Adina’s affection. With a bit of Indiana racing inspiration wrapped in, the Indianapolis Opera production will provide an intimate setting, emphasizing that opera, racing, and summer love can all happen under one roof! It will be sung in Italian with projected English supertitles, and presented at the Tarkington Theatre in Carmel, Indiana.
