The Indianapolis Opera is proud to announce our official virtual education content
for the 2020-21 school year!

In addition to the free virtual content provided below, the Indianapolis Opera, during a time when many schools are limited to e-learning or are unable to bring in outside speakers or performers, will offer five programs that are geared toward a variety of age groups and aim to assist Indiana educators, particularly music teachers, in creatively fulfilling their curriculum requirements in a time of socially-distanced learning.
Interested in learning more about these programs, please visit our Education/E-learning webpage for more details.

VIRTUAL ONLINE MUSIC EDUCATION RESOURCES

We hope this continues to support you and your children while we navigate through these unprecedented times.

The Tails of Cats and Mice
Download Curriculum Here
"The Tails of Cats and Mice" is an opera for young audiences based on stories from "Aesop's Fables" set to music by famous opera composers.

A Country Mouse has plans to see her cousin in the city, and needs help putting her suitcase together. Perhaps you can help her out. As soon as she's ready, a Lion is waiting outside her door with a predicament: he has a thorn in his paw and needs help. Will she be brave enough to help him?

Meanwhile, in the city, the City Mouse has problems of his own thanks to a Cat that won't leave him alone. Perhaps he has an ingenious solution to his feline friend, but it will take a lot of bravery to pull it off.

This version of "The Tails of Cats and Mice" was based on a staged version that was sent out all over the state of Indiana as part of the Indianapolis Opera Resident Artist Program. Due to school closures caused by coronavirus, we devised this new version for your own home enjoyment. However, the original opera features a choice system that allows the audience to decide how the story goes mid-way.

Cast: Janese Pentico - Country Mouse Alexander Henderson - Lion Felipe Prado - City Mouse Laura Zahn - Cat
Staff: Stage Director - Matt Cooksey Musical Coach and Pianist - Andrew Pham

Grades 5-9:
"Vedem" by Lori Laitman
Vedem was commissioned by Music of Remembrance, Mina Miller, Founder and Artistic Director. Made possible by a generous grant from the William O. and K. Carole Ellison Foundation.
Poems are by Petr Ginz, Hanuš Hachenburg, Zdeněk Ornest (Orce) and Josef Taussig. English translations by Paul Wilson from We are Children Just The Same: VEDEM, the secret magazine by the Boys of Terezin ©1995 by the Jewish Publication Society, used with permission.
Grades 5-9 PARENTS: Vedem is part of our Brundibar & Vedem Project, originally scheduled for April 2020, now postponed until the 2020-2021 season. This production celebrates the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in Europe, focusing specifically on the camp near Prague called Terezin, or Terezienstadt. Brundibar was written by the Jewish Czech composer Hans Krasa in 1938, and was performed by children in the camp for visiting dignitaries, including the Red Cross, as part of the Nazi propaganda effort. Vedem was written by American composer Lori Laitman in 2010, and tells the story of the boys living in the same room in Terezin who maintained a secret underground newspaper called "Vedem" throughout their imprisonment. These three excerpts from Vedem describe the thoughts and feelings of the captive children of Terezin.

Felipe Prado, tenor
Laura Zahn, mezzo-soprano
Andrew Pham, piano

The Brundibar & Vedem Project provides an incredible opportunity to share this important historical event, as experienced through the perspectives of children. We are offering educational programming as part of this Project, including school performances of Brundibar and supplementary curriculum guides, with generous assistance from the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis.
