A Home for Opera, Culture, and Community in Midtown Indianapolis
Originally built as the second generation home of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in 1960, this campus was home for fellowship and community-wide celebrations, like the famous Greek Festival (1974-2007). In 2008, the church moved again to Carmel, IN, after which the site was purchased by neighborhood philanthropist Bill Oesterle. In 2009, with the help of the Indianapolis Opera Board of Directors, the building was renamed The Frank & Katrina Basile Opera Center and served as the company’s rehearsal and education space. In 2020, under the leadership of General Director David Craig Starkey, the Indianapolis Opera realized its ultimate dream of buying the building and restoring the historic campus as their permanent home.
The Basile Opera Center (BOC) now continues a legacy of vocal arts training and artistic outreach with year-round activities, performances, gatherings, and classes. A Creative Placemaking Center, the BOC is located in the heart of Midtown Indianapolis, one of the city's most culturally and economically diverse neighborhoods. After a major renovation in 2022, this revitalized community arts center offers flexible performance, event, and rehearsal spaces and is an ideal destination for creative collaboration. Also a base for educational pursuits, the BOC is the administrative home to several diverse artistic organizations which inspire students of every age, culture, socio-economic background, and ability level with the power of music, dance, and art in multi-disciplinary performances, exhibitions, and artistic partnerships.
