A home for Opera, Culture, and Community in Midtown Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Opera (IO) is experiencing a renaissance. Following a comprehensive organizational assessment in 2014, which worked to understand our community's evolving needs and examined artistic and administrative operations, the company restructured and relaunched in 2015.
The new IO is a vibrant and nimble organization with strong and stable leadership, actively serving diverse Central Indiana audiences through mainstage operatic productions, concerts and recitals, and educational programs. A right-sized business model and strong, consistent leadership accompany the new artistic approach, delivering unique and compelling opera experiences on a sustainable budget. The result is consistently strong reviews; an expanding base of patrons, subscribers, and donors; and seven consecutive years of modest operating surpluses.
Also reflective of this upward trajectory is the successful redevelopment of the Basile Opera Center (BOC), which has served as a hub of education, outreach, artistry, and collaboration since 2009. Located at 40th and Pennsylvania Streets in Indianapolis, it serves the neighborhood, city, and region from the historic and beloved former campus of the Greek Orthodox Church, once home to Greek Fest and other community-wide celebrations.
